Welcome to St. Luke's Linch
***** BREAKING NEWS *****
- Mike Friend’s comments on Harvest Sunday
On this very special day I am extremely proud to say that ‘All is safely gathered in’....I am, of course referring to the fund raising for our new annexe....for the last five years we have been trying....really, really trying to raise the sum of £287 k.
In fact we have done better than that.....the phrase ‘God works in mysterious ways His wonders to perform’ springs to mind. Only two days ago a Trust that I had been pestering for a while finally came up trumps to the tune of £3k. So now we have raised £289,740 and now we already have in addition to the £287k an additional sum just a few pounds short of £20k to help with the fittings and the repayment of the Diocesan 6 year loan....amazing......and an enormous thank you to so many people....the Fund Raising Team, the generosity of so many individual donors, Trusts, Grant Bodies and to everyone who attended our many Fund Raising Events....wonderful!!
Over the five years many of you will have heard me using the Royal Tank Regiment motto...’Through mud and blood to the green fields beyond’.... at times over the last five years it has been difficult.... however it is purely coincidental that World War II is our theme for our celebratory Christmas Party on December 3rd as mentioned in the Pew Sheet... it promises to be a very, very special great fun evening. Can I suggest you book really, really early.....
Thank you for listening...it has been a fairly emotional period for many of us...and if I may crave your indulgence I would like to finish by reciting the Linch Poem....
THE LINCH POEM
Set in the hedgerows and fields
lost under Older Hill
but discoverable.
Comings and goings
down the ancient paths.
Faithful labourers, cottagers
hallowed the shrine
near and yet far, still
sought after and found
place of holiness and quiet,
alive yet,
and worshipping a Risen Lord.
In a world spinning with change
but centred still on holy things.
With yew tree, wild flowers,
music, candles
burning in the majesty
of prayer
St.Luke’s Linch,
celebrating, thankful
memoried, open, living,
praise.

Our simple, beautiful and quiet Grade II listed little church dates from 1700-1712, when Peter Bettesworth was chosen to build it, as the lintel over the doorway records.
It was in place of the parish's long-gone Domesday church near Bepton and was very small. Charles Taylor of Hollycombe extended it in 1814, giving the bell and the fine German glass of c1465 in the north window.
At the end of the 19th Century it was extended again in celebration of The Queen's Jubilee, by the Hawkshaw family, also of Hollycombe, and the main windows and the organ were given.
